Doughnuts are Brilliant

When I eat a burger I semi-justify it by saying 'this is packed full of protein, perfect for after the gym' whilst conveniently forgetting it's swimming it fat. With the doughnut I find it hard to justify getting one every Friday lunchtime but I've passed caring now and nothing can break my weekly ritual, unless someone makes a scientific discovery that proves doughnuts shorten your lifespan by 50 years...actually I doubt that would even make any difference.

So here's a run down of some of the doughnuts that I've tried in London:

The Daddy- St John Bakery Doughnuts

These people are responsible for my addiction to doughnuts. I remember walking in St John by Spitalfields and purchasing one of their vanilla custard doughnuts for £2.50. At the time I thought it was a tad mental buying one doughnut for this price when I could go into Tesco and buy 12. However, that first bite changed everything. The dough is light and airy which contrasts brilliantly with the custard filling inside which is a mix of Creme Patissiere and Creme Chantilly. It's one of the most satisfying mouthful of food I've had. Double the price and I still wouldn't have a issue paying for one of these doughnuts.

The New Daddy? - Breadahead

Justin Gellatly, the former head baker of St John and the creator of the aforementioned St John Doughnut left to set up Breadahead Bakery in Borough Market. Has he created an ever better doughnut than the one at St John? Possibly. There are few things better than getting up early on a Saturday morning and grabbing a breadahead doughnut for breakfast. Again, there is a incredible lightness of the dough which matches up with the indulgent vanilla custard inside. Their caramel custard with salted honeycomb is absolutely genius too. These guys are definitely my go to when I need a doughnut fix.

The Quality- Quality Chop House Choxnut

I knew even before tasting or reading anything about this doughnut that it was going to be good. Everytime I've had a meal here it has been faultless. The chouxnut is almost spot on, beneath the sugary crust is the lightest and fluffiest dough. I think I prefer this dough to Breadahead and St John (marginal though). The custard filling isn't as punchy though but it's still an amazing doughnut. Unfortunately they only sell them on Fridays but if you ever happen to be around at that time in Farringdon pop into their shop and grab a doughnut or 4.

Dum Dum Yum Yum

I'm chucking in yum yums and cronuts into the list because they're all the same family! I like yum yums but I still prefer the classic doughnut. The yum yum doesn't have the softness of a doughnut, however the Dum Dum yum yum has probably my favourite filling out of any pastry I've had; incredibly rich Dulce de leche. One minor gripe is the name, it's called the Peter Andre...beg you to change it!

Old school taking on new school- Rinkoff Crodough.

From a bakery thats been around for over a hundred years they have produced their version of Dominque Ansel's cronut. Again, it doesn't beat the doughnut but Rinkoffs definitely produce my favourite alternative to the doughnut. These things are mammoth, one will without doubt be enough to satisfy. Out of the flavours they produce my favourite is the toffee apple crumble.

The Dosant?? Kookybakes

I'm not sure why, but anything too oily kind of gives me a headache. I love the products from Kookybakes and their salted caramel dosant is nice, but it's a little too greasy and has a slightly unusual chewy texture to it. The salted caramel filling is spot on though.

America's take on the doughnut- 1235

Probably the most disappointing doughnut I've tried recently. These are produced by Brad McDonald, the head chef at The Lockhart and his wife Molly. The dough is too dense for my liking, where I could feel I could eat Breadahead's doughnuts endlessly, one of the 1235 doughnuts was enough. More positively, the chocolate filling is excellent, a shame the dough doesn't do it justice.

More and more places are popping up with their own doughnut creations, really looking forward to adding to this list!
