Everything is pretty grand about the Shard, what do you expect when it's part owned by the State of Qatar. From the ground floor you walk into the automated lift which takes you up to the 32nd floor where all the restaurants are located. You've got Oblix, Hutong up a flight of stairs and then you've got Aqua going down on the 31st floor. The first thing you're struck with when you walk into Aqua is the floor to ceiling windows that perfectly frame London even on the grayest of days. You've got the perfect views of all the big players of the London landscape, from the Walkie Talkie to the London Eye. It really is one of the best vantage points in Town.
Service was absolutely impeccable from the start. I'm not a connoisseur of extravagant places so I don't really know what to expect when I enter environments like this but everyone at the Shard and Aqua are so warm and friendly. Sometimes I feel a bit of the fool asking, 'where's this' or 'what's that', but Aqua make sure you don't feel out of place or inadequate.
Obviously one of the main selling points at Aqua is the view and when we were taken to our tables we were given a choice of window seats, to be honest it was really a choice between one excellent view to another.
For me there is only one way to see if a restaurant can live up to the mighty Little Chef Olympic Breakfast, and that's by ordering a full English, or in Aqua's case, the 'Shard Breakfast'. This comes with two Old House Farms eggs any way, Staffordshire drycured streaky bacon, Cumberland sausage, spinich, Bermondsay salted ricotta, vine tomatoes, smocked ham hock, hash browns, black pudding and toasted sourdough. I went for poached eggs which were cooked perfectly, slice a knife through the white and watch the beautiful yolk flow onto the sourdough. The sausage was juicy and herby, the hash brown was cooked to a crispy golden brown. The spinach and ricotta pulled the standard full English staples together nicely. My only slight gripe was the bacon, a little tough for my liking and was quite difficult to slice through but all in all an excellent breakfast.
There are plenty of places around London where you can enjoy a meal whilst soaking in the panorama of London, you've got Duck and Waffle at Heron Tower, Oxo Tower, Paramount at Centre Point and the National Portrait Gallery Restaurant to name a few, now the restaurants in the Shard can definitely be join the club.
Not a bad view for breakfast |
