Whilst working in Hong Kong I had massive cravings for some top quality burgers, these cravings weren't a joke either, I'm talking about keeping you up at night, staring at the ceiling picturing burgers level craving. So I made it my mission to find burgers that could sate my needs. Sadly there wasn't anything that could really cut it. You've got the burgeRoom in Causeway Bay that do huge burgers which are pretty good, and there's also BLT Burger which was my favourite, they do amazing onion rings and milkshakes but the itch was still there. Then during one slow lunch at work I was wasting my hour flicking through pictures on Instagram when I came across this thing of beauty, it was a burger from this place called Patty and Bun. I knew things would not be right until I had this burger, so no word of a lie I marched back into the office and handed in my resignation and got straight onto a plane back to the UK (ok that's a total lie, I was scheduled to come back).
As soon as I touched down in Heathrow, I hopped onto the underground and headed straight towards Bond Street, suitcase in tow. I generally look an absolute dishevelled mess after a long haul flight but I didn't really care, showers can wait, burgers can't. I was pretty disorientated when I got to Bond Street but I managed to get my bearings and find James Street where Patty & Bun is located. I was within touching distance of it, but this sinking feeling started to set in as I got closer, I could see a swarm of people milling around this little shop front, oh for F%*k sake, all these people were here for Patty & Bun too. 'There's around a half hour wait' the waitress explained. Ok, relax, I've just done a 12 hour flight, plus a 45 minute tube ride, what's another half hour? Bloody annoying that's what it was, but I took deep breaths, found my inner Chi and waited patiently.
Half hour went by and I was finally seated. It's a cosy little restaurant and there's a good chance you'll end up sitting next to a stranger but that's fine. So getting down to it, their menu is a pun extravaganza, their standard burger is the Ari Gold, they also do the Smokey Robinson, Lamb Shank Redemption, Jose Chilli and Hot Chic Chicken burger. I opted for the Ari Gold with a side of chicken wings and chips. The wait was surprisingly short given the volume of punters they had that day. The burger is a stunning little creation, the brioche bun has a beautiful gloss on it, the gooey cheese slowly runs out of the burger, you just know it's going to be a mess to eat. The quality of the meat shines right through from the first bite, we're talking about 35 day aged grass fed Aberdeen Angus Beef. These patties are made fresh every day and its cooked to a perfect medium rare. All the elements of the burger stand up really, the cheese is melty and indulgent, the mayo has a slight smokey hint to it and the brioche bun is soft and JUST about holds its integreity in the face of all the juices flowing from the meat.
I absolutely loved their sides. I am a chip fan so they could have served me bog standard fish and chip shop chips and I'm sure I would have devoured them but these were genuinely moreish, would have been nice if they were a little crispier but excellent nevertheless. I've taken various friends and family here and the reaction to the chicken wings is mixed and I can totally understand why, personally I really enjoyed them. The wings are confit so the meat comes off the bone effortlessly. It's slathered in a sweet bbq sauce and I can see why some people would find it a bit too sweet. Like the burger it's an absolute mess to eat, forget about bringing a first date here, you don't really want to be chatting to someone you're trying to impress whilst meat juices are running down your face.
There had been a lot of hype about this place before I went and it's pretty disappointing when something doesn't live up to the hype but for me Patty & Bun really knocks it out of the park, great atmosphere, really friendly service and a burger that I'd have as my death row meal.

If you are still in London, you need to try Honest Burgers. IMHO, they just pip Patty and Bun as the consistently the best burger I have ever had!
ReplyDeleteYep, tried Honest, really like their burgers too. But I prefer the juiciness of Patty & Bun!
